Introduction To Wayside Detection Systems

This 1.0 hour webinar is designed to provide a basic understanding of the operations of defect detector systems. It is not to instruct on the maintenance of these systems but to provide an introduction to how they work.

Presenter Biographies

Fred Meeks joined the Atchita Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in 1972, soon after graduating with his BS EE from the University of Missouri at Columbia, MO and then transitioned to the BNSF Railway after the 1996 merger. Fred’s railroad career included positions as signal assistant, signal designer, signal supervisor, engineer interlocking systems, with 25 years dedicated to managing defect detector systems on the AT&SF and BNSF. Fred retired from BNSF in 2010 after 38 years in the railroad industry. Post retirement, he established Meeks Consulting LLC where he continues to provide detector system expertise to the rail industry.

Paul Younger began his railroad career in 1969 with the former Missouri Pacific Railroad progressing from signal assistant, to signal designer, and Manager Electronic Design.  He was responsible for the CTC code systems and detector systems on the UPRR for 20 years. Paul retired from UPRR in 2009 after 40 years, subsequently establishing Nebraska Signal Design & Support, Inc. where he continues to provide defect detector expertise to the rail industry.

Both Fred and Paul have been active members of AREMA C38, as well as predecessor AAR Committee F. Fred has served multiple terms as committee chairman.
