Steve Hill, PE
Steve Hill has been working for railroads for more than 35 years. He has held positions from section laborer to assistant division manager engineering to manager projects for US and Canadian Class 1 roads. He is currently Chief Engineer Track and Structures for Caltrain, the commuter operation on the San Francisco Peninsula. Through his career, Steve has dealt with the results of scour and has worked on many individual solutions and preventive measures. He holds Bachelor’s Degrees in History and Civil Engineering, and a Masters in Business Administration, and is a registered Professional Engineer.
Donald L. McCammon
Donald McCammon is the Vice President with HDR Engineering, Inc. in Missoula, Montana. Hegraduated from Montana State University in 1982 and went to work for Burlington Northern Railroad, a predecessor of BNSF. His 11 ½-year career with BN covered work in Montana, Kansas City and Denver including the Powder River Basin. He held various positions in the field including Assistant Roadmaster running steel gangs, Assistant B&B Supervisor and then Manager of Structures. His staff positions included Bridge Design Engineer and Manager of System Engineering’s Computer Systems. In 1993 he went to work for HNTB in their Denver office and in 1997 moved to Montana with HDR. As a consultant, he’s worked UPRR projects on the Marysville Sub, near Palm Springs, the RR Bridge work on the I-15 construction in Salt Lake and several grade separation projects.
He was awarded a Senior Professional Associate in 2001 in recognition of his contributions to HDR and the engineering industry where he has participated in RT&S articles and edited the railroad chapter in Merrick’s 4th Edition of the Civil Engineering Handbook. He became a Vice President in HDR’s Railroad Business Class in 2006. He has performed railroad design, construction and review work from Australia to Florida and Alaska and is active in Bridge Safety Management assessments and development.
Don is a former Board Member of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association. He has been a member of AREMA since 1982, past Chairman of Committee 7 – Timber Structures, and is active on Committee 10 – Structures Maintenance and Construction, where he is helping develop the upcoming Bridge Inspection course. He was one of the original developers and instructors for the Bridge Inspection course sponsored by the B&B association and AREMA in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. He also is active on the ASLRRA’s Bridge Committee working on guideline documents for Bridge Safety Management.
Dan Tingley
Dan Tingley is Senior Structural Engineer/Wood Technologist for Wood Research and Development Ltd., an International Accreditation Service certified test laboratory and third party quality assurance agency specializing in timber bridge inspection, maintenance and rehabilitation. Tingley has a BScFE and BScCE (Structural) from University of New Brunswick and a Ph.D. in Wood Technology and Structural Engineering from Oregon State University. He specializes in timber bridge inspection utilizing non destructive testing equipment and timber bridge maintenance working in various countries on old heritage listed timber bridges. He is a professional engineer registered to practice in several provinces in Canada. He lives in Portland Oregon. He serves on Committee 10 and 7.
John F. Unsworth, PEng
John Unsworth is Manager, Structures Planning and Design at Canadian Pacific Railway in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He holds a B.Eng. degree from Concordia University in Montreal and an M.Eng. in Structural Engineering from the University of British Columbia. He has over 25 years of engineering experience involving the maintenance, construction and design of railway bridges and other structures. He is a member and former Chairman of the AREMA Steel Structures Committee 15, a member of the TRB Steel Bridges Committee and serves as the Chairman of the AAR Bridge Research Advisory Group. He is has served as Vice President, Structures for AREMA and is the current President of AREMA.
