Technical Committees

The purpose of this committee is to develop concepts, provide information and recommend practices for the design, installation, operation and maintenance of highway-railroad grade crossing warning equipment and systems.

Sub-Committees and Current Assignments

Subcommittee 1: Warning Systems Controls.

•Currently revising manual part on the Interconnection and Pre-emption of Traffic Signals near Railroad Crossings with Active Warning Devices.

•Developing a recommended practice(s) and reviewing the FRA final rule on the use of locomotive horns at highway-rail grade crossings. This includes recommended practices involving the use of four quadrant gates.

•Responsible for updating AREMA C&S Manual Parts concerning warning system control circuits.

Subcommittee 2: Warning System Installation and Maintenance.

•Analyze FRA activation failure information to determine trends and need for recommended practices to mitigate to activation failures.

•Responsible for updating AREMA C&S Manual Parts that are related to the installation and maintenance of warning systems.

Subcommittee 3: Warning System Equipment.

•Developing Railroad Pedestrian Only Crossing Signal recommended practices including an active “Second Train Coming” sign, and soft-tone pedestrian audible warning devices.

•Responsible for updating AREMA C&S Manual Parts concerning warning system hardware and components.

Subcommittee 4: Intelligent Transportation Systems.

•Work with IEEE as Standards Development Organizations in the preparation of relevant ITS Standards.

•Develop and maintain Manual Parts related to alternate train detection devices and systems.
