PTC - An Opportunity for Interoperability

PTC implementation in the near term is focused on compliance with the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (RSIA). Interoperability is being address through cooperative agreements between some of the stakeholders, though there will be a range of different technical solutions each which are not like-of-like replaceable nor operate with consistent operating rules and procedures. As documented in the FRA’s PTC Economic Analysis and Oliver Wyman’s Assessment of Commercial Benefits, there are near term safety benefits resulting from PTC implementation, while broader benefits relating to performance and capacity, including those associated with interoperability, will not be realized in this generation of technology.

As PTC is here to stay and further investment in the Railroads continues to progress through the FRA’s High Speed Intercity Passenger Rail (HSIPR) program and other Railroad investments (federally and privately funded), there is an opportunity to reap significantly improved benefits from second and third generation PTC systems. Technical, functional, physical and operational interoperability offer a range of whole life cost and performance benefits, although may not be needed operational in all locations.

This webinar will discuss the opportunities related to interoperability, potential near term actions and longer term linkages between PTC and high speed rail standards.

What you will take away:

  1. Summary of current interoperability solutions for first generation PTC
  2. Description of the benefits of interoperability (longer term)
  3. List of key enablers for Interoperability
  4. Potential next steps for the FRA and industry
