AREMA Educational Foundation Scholarships

The AREMA Educational Foundation provides scholarships to engineering students who are specializing in the railway industry and supports other educational and training endeavors that help to ensure the future of the profession.

The Foundation is pleased to announce the following scholarships to be awarded in 2017.

General criteria for all scholarship applicants include having an interest in railway engineering, maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0, and being available for interview by the AREMA Scholarship Committee.

The 2017 application form applies to all Scholarships offered by AREMA. By completion of this form, the Scholarship Review Committee will determine which Scholarship(s) the candidate qualifies for. The deadline for applications is December 9, 2016.

REMSA Scholarship ($1,000)

Enrolled student who has completed at least one quarter or semester in an accredited* four or five year engineering or engineering technology undergraduate degree program.

AREMA Presidential
Spouse Scholarship ($1,000)

Enrolled female student who has completed at least one quarter or semester in an accredited* four or five year engineering or engineering technology undergraduate
degree program.

Charles L. Stanford Family Ohio State University Railway Engineering Scholarship ($1,000)

Undergraduate student at Ohio State University enrolled full time in civil, mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering curriculum, having completed at least one full term. General criteria also applies.

Committee 4 - Rail
Art Worth Memorial Scholarship ($10,000 and 2 - $2,000)

Enrolled student who has completed at least one quarter or semester in an accredited* four or five year engineering or engineering technology undergraduate degree program with priority given to the following disciplines in this order: Metallurgy, Materials Science, Welding, Non-destructive Testing, Railway Engineering.

Committee 5 - Track Scholarship ($1,500)

Undergraduate student enrolled full time in an accredited civil, mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering curriculum, having completed at least one year.

Committee 12
Rail Transit Scholarship ($2,000)

Enrolled student who has completed at least one quarter or semester in an accredited* engineering program OR part time student working full time in the railway industry; and the student demonstrates a preference for rail transit engineering.

Committee 14
Yards & Terminals Scholarship ($4,000)

Sophomores or above pursuing a bachelor’s degree as an engineering major currently (or previously) enrolled in a rail engineering class or conducting railroad engineering research and a member of an AREMA Student Chapter.

Committee 15 - Steel Structures
Professor Wallace Sanders Scholarship
($2,500)

General criteria applies for an engineering student in the field of structural engineering pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Committee 24
Education & Training Scholarship ($3,000)

Current AREMA Student Member who has completed at least on quarter or semester in an accredited* four or five year engineering or engineering technology undergraduate degree program.

Committee 27 – Maintenance-of-Way

Scholarships ($2,000 and $1,500)
Josef W. Neuhofer Memorial Scholarship ($4,350)

(Sponsored and governed by Committee 27 guidelines)
Priority is given to a Committee 27 family member or a family member of someone in the work equipment industry for railroads.

Committee 33 - Electric Energy
Utilization Scholarship ($2,000)

General criteria applies. Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant demonstrating an interest in the field of rail traction electrification systems engineering.

Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)

General criteria applies. Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant demonstrating an interest in the field of rail traction electrification systems engineering.

Communications & Signals Functional Group Scholarship - 2 Awards ($2,000 each)

Student pursuing a four or five year Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science or Information Technology undergraduate degree program at an accredited* institution who has demonstrated an interest in railroad Signaling and Communications. Priority is given to AREMA C&S Functional Group family members, including grandchildren.

John J. Cunningham
Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
(Sponsored jointly by Committees 11 and 17)

Junior or Senior college student pursuing an undergraduate degree in a professional field that has direct applications in the passenger rail sector.

Michael and Gina Garcia
Rail Engineering Scholarship ($3,000)

Priority given to student who is married and/or supporting a family while enrolled as a student.

Michael W. & Jean D. Franke Family
Foundation Scholarship ($6,000)
Larry L. Etherton Scholarship ($1,500)

Engineering student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Michigan Tech Alumni Scholarship
(3 Awards $1,500 each)

Undergraduate or graduate engineering student in good standing at Michigan Tech University. This scholarship is available to all Railroad Engineering and Activities Club (REAC) Members and Club Officers. Please specify on the application if you are a member or officer of REAC.

New York Central Railroad
Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)

General criteria applies. Priority given to a student at Clarkson University.

Norfolk Southern
Foundation Scholarship ($1,000)

The student's institution must be located in Norfolk Southern's service area (22 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada). The 22 states include AL, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA and WV.

North Carolina
Railroad Company Scholarship ($1,000)

Enrolled student who is a US citizen and a resident of North Carolina for tuition purposes. Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited North Carolina College or University civil, mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering program of study leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering.

Structures Functional Group Member
Emeritus Scholarship in Honor of Mr. Donald V. Sartore ($1,000)

General criteria applies for an engineering student in the field of structural engineering pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Union Pacific
William E. Wimmer Scholarship ($1,000)

Enrolled student who is in their Sophomore, Junior or Senior academic year located at a U.S. Midwestern, Southwestern or Western University with an accredited* engineering curriculum, pursuing a BS or higher degree in Civil Engineering (all disciplines), Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management.

William H. Becker
Memorial Scholarship ($1,500)

An enrolled student pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Construction Management at an accredited institution, who has demonstrated an interest in a railroad industry career through participation in an AREMA student chapter, or through co-op, internship, or summer employment experience.

*Programs accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (or comparable organization in Canada and Mexico).
